2 to 3
The humble cauliflower... It’s white. It’s leafy. It’s classic healthy veg. And, it makes insanely delicious, tender, and meaty buffalo wings?!
That’s right - plot twist - this modest veg turns out to be an incredibly versatile vegan goldmine for making a whole host of delicious meat-like dishes.
Over the last few years, many pioneering vegans have been exploring cauliflower’s awesome potential - from cauliflower steaks to cauliflower rice. Let’s just say their hard work has paid off, and vegan cauliflower buffalo wings are pretty much the peak of what cauliflower has to offer.
Here at PlantX, we are more than happy to join the crowd worshipping at the shrine of buffalo cauliflower wings. One bite of a succulent cauliflower wing and, trust us, you won’t look back.
Here’s our favorite recipe for creating this legendary dish at home.
Let’s talk taste:
So, what is so good about these vegan buffalo cauliflower wings? Where should we start…
The first bite!
Sink your teeth into one of our buffalo wings and you will find a crispy outer shell with just the right amount of crunch. Brimming with the flavors of garlic, onion, spice, and the all-important sweet spicy tang of buffalo hot sauce, this mix brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘finger-licking good’.
What’s inside this buffalo shell? Soft, tender cauliflower. With just the right amount of subtle seasoning, this amazing veg provides the perfect counterpart to the crispy spicy shell. Baked to perfection, this melt-in-your-mouth cauliflower really does give the meat a bad name.
Trust us, buffalo cauliflower wings are one more reason to be vegan, and, this recipe is our go-to.
Making these vegan buffalo cauliflower wings may take a little longer to whip up than your average week-night dinner, but trust us, you won’t regret putting in the effort.
It should take around 50 minutes to prep your cauliflower and an additional 40 minutes to cook it. That means the total cook time is around 1 hr 30 mins, which makes this a perfect dish for wowing guests or treating yourself with.
Our recipe makes 2-3 servings of cauliflower wings if you are eating them on their own. However, if you were to add in some sides, you could serve a few more people. Our recommendations? For a healthier option, why not try combining these cauli wings with a Couscous Salad? Or double up comfort food with comfort food by adding some Sweet Potato Hash.
Our final tip? There is no better accompaniment to buffalo cauliflower wings than ranch dip. If you are feeling lazy, why not try some of the amazing vegan ranch PlantX has to offer. Like the Fabalish Plant-Based Ranch made from aquafaba. Or, if you really want to blow your guests away, try whipping up some of our Spicy Ranch Dressing, made from cashews - it’s nutty and delicious.
The creamy ranch is the perfect complement to the spicy flavors of buffalo wings, and all these possibilities are really getting our mouths watering…
1/2 large head cauliflower, cut into florets
cooking spray or oil
1/4 cup almond meal
1/4 tsp garlic powder
3 tbsp milk of choice
1/2 cup buffalo sauce or hot sauce
2 tsp oil or vegan butter spread
1 cup plant milk, I used almond milk (250 ml)
3/4 cup flour (120 g), use gluten-free if needed
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
Wash the cauliflower well, and shake dry. Place on a large cutting board.
Using a large, heavy knife, cut it in half from the bottom stem all the way through the top. From there, cut smaller cauliflower florets. That’s it! Now you have smaller pieces of cauliflower, without much struggle.
Once you have cut cauliflower florets, make the batter and bake the cauliflower. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
Add the vegan milk, flour, garlic powder, pepper and salt to a large bowl, big enough to hold all the cauliflower as well as the batter. Whisk well until smooth.
Add the cauliflower to the batter in the bowl and toss to combine. Feel free to work in batches if it’s easier. Remove the pieces of cauliflower, one by one, and tap off the excess batter a few times on the side of the bowl.
Place the battered pieces in a baking pan and make sure the florets are not touching each other.
Bake in the preheated oven at 425 degrees on the center rack 25 minutes. Combine the oil with the buffalo sauce (because the fat helps the sauce adhere to the cauliflower). Dip cauliflower in sauce. Bake another 15 minutes.
The best thing about this vegan cauliflower wings recipe? How surprisingly healthy it is!
Unlike shop-bought buffalo wings which are often packed with salt, artificial flavors, and preservatives, our cauliflower wings recipe uses only natural ingredients and is lower in salt than your average wing.
Substituting chicken out for cauliflower also has amazing nutritional benefits! Instead of being high in cholesterol, high in saturated fat, and high in fat (like chicken), cauliflower is high in fiber and antioxidants and is one of your five a day! Pretty neat, right?
