Vegan Cheese Sauce

Let’s face it. We all know that as a vegan, cheese can be the hardest thing we have to give up. And, it’s not just cheddars, the swiss cheeses, and the mozzarellas that have left gaps in our lives - it’s all the delicious cheesy foods that come with them. Especially cheese sauce…

Rich, creamy and luxurious in all the right ways, cheese sauce is the delicious secret to so many classic comfort dishes. From macaroni cheese to nachos, a slathering of cheese sauce is guaranteed to level up any meal or snack time. So, do you really think a vegan should have to miss out?

We don’t think so. PlantX to the rescue - here for all of your vegan cheese sauce needs!

What Is Vegan Cheese Sauce?

What is vegan cheese sauce? The clue is in the name. A sauce made of cheese! Lots of varieties exist, however, generally a cheese sauce is likely to contain butter, cheese, and milk cooked into a creamy mix.

Vegan cheese sauce recipes are a little more creative. They can be made from vegan cheese, plant-based milk, and butter, or use other ingredients (like cashews) to recreate the legendary taste and texture in a vegan cheese sauce form.

What Can I Serve With Vegan Cheese Sauce?

When it comes to cooking with dairy-free cheese sauce, the possibilities are endless. Cheese sauce is often the key ingredient to deliciously luxurious pasta bakes, mac n cheeses, and lasagnas, but, this fantastically versatile sauce can also be poured over nachos or fries, or used as a dip for chips or crudités. You could even slather it into a burger! Vegan cheese sauce can be used for all the same stuff.

Basically, the question you should be asking is: what can’t I serve with vegan cheese sauce?

What Is The Secret To A Delicious Vegan Cheese Sauce Recipe?

Delicious Vegan Cheese Sauce

So, without cheese to fall back on, what is the secret to making a finger-licking vegan cheese sauce recipe that hits the right spots?

Our answer? Nutritional yeast. Nutritional yeast is a deactivated form of baker’s yeast that is widely loved by vegans for its intense umami flavor. This makes it perfect for creamifying vegan cheese sauces and turning them into luxury cheese-like delights.

Whether you are using vegan milk, cashews, or something else entirely for your vegan cheese sauce recipe, a generous pour of nutritional yeast is guaranteed to ramp your plant-based cheese sauce up a notch. Oh, and it also contains shocking amounts of nutritional benefits, including bags of B12 and folic acid, which is another big plus.

Our other top tip? When making a vegan cheese sauce recipe, it’s important to get the flavors right. Rather than relying on the flavor of cheese alone, we have to craft our own yummy tastes, which is why getting the seasoning right is a must.

Garlic powder, salt, pepper, and spices all help to craft that delicious cheesy taste in a plant-based cheese sauce. Mustard and onion power are also great ways to add depth and a creamy flavor.

Top tips?

As we mentioned, great seasoning is essential to a great vegan cheese sauce recipe. In this recipe, we went for a combination of turmeric, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. However, feel free to alter it to your own tastes! If you want a bit of heat in your sauce, we recommend switching out normal pepper for cayenne pepper or a dash of chilis. Alternatively, to add a pungent kick, why not add in some mustard? Wholegrain is an absolute delight!

Also, if you want to ramp up the creaminess of this plant-based cheese sauce one more notch, switch out the water in this recipe for plant-based milk. Adding in milk instead of water will add an extra level of luxury creaminess to this already creamy recipe, so why not give it a try?

Finally, if you want a way to add even more cheesiness to this vegan cheese sauce recipe, we recommend making the most of the PlantX vegan cheese collection. A few spoonfuls of Follow Your Heart’s Vegan Parmesan melted into this recipe will not go amiss, or, add a touch of spice with this Fiesta Blend Vegan Cheese
