Vegan Travel Tips: How to Find Delicious Plant-Based Food on the Go

Vegan Travel Tips: How to Find Delicious Plant-Based Food on the Go

We’ve all been there at one point or another. When we’re traveling, it gets hard to find some food. Never mind the food being good, sometimes it just gets hard to find actual food we can eat. Sure, one can often argue that we should just get some fried rice here or maybe some soup there… But come on! We deserve some variety!

As vegans, we think that we also deserve to immerse ourselves in the culture of food. We don’t want to settle for some side dish or appetizer and hope it can satisfy our hunger. We want to eat! Traveling isn’t just about seeing the sights and meeting new people. It’s about feasting on the many delicious dishes in each country or city you go to.

Some of the Best Countries for Vegans

We’ll skip our very own because you have us for all your vegan food needs. It’s not surprising that Asian countries are some of the best countries that vegans can visit. Some of their diets are rooted in religion, which involves vegan staples like tofu, noodles, and rice dishes, so finding a plant-based main could be easier than one might think.

India

India itself has a significant vegetarian population. Many of their religions promote nonviolence or respect for all living beings. That said, a vegan Indian food option wouldn’t be so hard to find.

Singapore

Singapore is often called a cultural melting pot because of the many different, well, cultures blended in one small country. Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian cuisines can be found in different food centers scattered all over the country. You can’t miss them.

Thailand

Yellow curry, veggie tom yum, or pad thai your faves? Then Thailand is the destination for you. In larger cities, you’ll find it easier to find your vegan-friendly foods. Do be mindful to ask if certain dishes are made with fish sauce or shrimp paste. Those are staple condiments in Thai cooking.

Greece

A lot of Greek food can easily be made vegan. Just ask for no feta on your Greek Salad or for a cheeseless Dakos. Other vegan dishes you can enjoy in Greece are briam, fasolada, and tomatokeftedes. Don’t know what these are? Well, that’s your cue to go travel there!

Vegan Travel Snacks

Let’s say you’re taking a long flight to a far-away country. You’re not gonna stuff your bags with snacks - think of the fees! What you’re going to do is pick up snacks at your destination. We’re not going to bore you with the usual tips. This time, we’re going to share something new (hopefully). Yes, snack aisles at supermarkets can be a great way to get some fun snacks, but they’re not always obviously vegan-friendly - Aside from the usual nuts and dried fruits.

When the going gets tough, we head towards the canned goods section. We gotta get resourceful! We’ll find baby corn, asparagus, mushrooms… All in cans and ready to eat. We’ve survived many island-hopping trips with a tip like this! Sometimes, some places just don’t have vegan options, and we’re left feeling hungry. We don’t mind the temporary added weight as long as we can eat.

Communication

Yes, we know translate apps exist. But we’re think-about-the-worst-case-scenario types of travelers (aka we’re paranoid sometimes). We don’t like holding up queues as we try to communicate our food preferences. That’s why we always have a digital or physical copy (just in case our phones run out of battery) of food allergen icons. Many of these icons are universally understood, and all it takes is showing these icons to a waiter or server to get a quick yes or no if they have food that you can eat there.

Even if you have no food allergies, these icons translate well to vegan diet restrictions. The dairy, fish, shellfish, and egg-free icons are easy to get. With the right context clues, makeshift poultry, pork, and beef-free icons are easy to understand. A quick little Google search of universal food allergy icons will show you what we mean.
