How to Care for Money Tree

  • Light: Bright indirect to low light. The money tree is low-light tolerant and adapts well to artificial light making this a great office plant.
  • Water: Water when the top 1-2” of soil is dry. Water thoroughly and drain excess water from the pot. Try to keep water away from the base of the plant to prevent rot.
  • Humidity: Average relative humidity of 25% to 49%
  • Temperature: Average from 18°C to 24°C (65°F - 75°F)
  • Fertilizer: Follow a monthly fertilizing schedule when the plant is actively growing. In most cases, this is in the spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer - this means a ratio of NPK that is all the same. Ex: 10-10-10.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, high organic matter soil mix.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings in the spring or summer - cut the stem with a node and place it in water until it forms roots. You can also use air-layering as a more experienced method of propagation.
  • Repotting: This can be done every 12-18 months. Choose a pot that is 2” larger in diameter than the original pot.
  • Cleaning Tip: Gently wipe the leaves down with a damp cloth and remove any yellowing or damaged leaves.
  • Toxicity: Non-toxic. It’s always best to keep plants away from pets and children.

Money Tree - Common Problems

Why is the stem of my Money Tree soft: This is a sign of overwatering. Reduce watering and try to avoid getting water on the base of the stem.

There are light brown marks on the leaves, how do I fix this: Your plant may be getting too much direct light. Move the plant to a new location with indirect light.

Why are the leaves dropping: The Money Tree does not like to be moved very often. Once you find a suitable spot for the plant, keep it there. If you do have to move your plant, you may notice leaf drop. This is not a cause for concern.

Signs of Overwatering: New growth becomes soft and brown and the leaves begin to drop.

Common Pests: Susceptible to mealybugs and scale.

Frequently Asked Questions
