What Are The Benefits Of A Plant-Based Diet?

Being healthier is one of the main benefits of a plant-based diet. When people go out and purchase a pork chop or chicken filet, it’s unlikely that they get a nutritional label to go along with it. That means most folks are unaware of what that livestock could have eaten or what synthetic ingredients could be hiding inside of them! You’ll notice that plant-based alternatives often have a label - and most of the ingredients on that label list familiar ingredients. No confusing science terms or confounding numbers, just straight-up natural ingredients.

Let’s dial in on those processed meats. Health-wise, they’re often linked to weight gain. Regular animal meat, as you can expect, contains saturated and trans fats. Fat, lard, and oils derived from cooking conventional meat could affect your health severely. That’s why you’ll notice more and more people recommending a plant-based diet. Cholesterol and artificial ingredients are but a few of the bad that comes from animal-based meat - and those are already enough for us to want to stick with our plant-based diet!

Let’s talk about how a plant-based diet can help our planet. Raising livestock actually takes up more land compared to agriculture, about 100 times more actually! And about agriculture, did you know that more than half of the cereals grown in the entire world are used for animal feed and biofuels? That’s right, we don’t even get to eat most of it. This also shows us that the fewer cattle we need to produce food for human consumption, the less land we need to take up to grow crops - a whopping 75% less of agriculture space, in fact!

Everything needs water to survive. That’s what makes it so precious, and that’s why we should manage this resource more properly. There’s even a study that shows that vegan meat potentially uses up to 99% LESS water use than regular meat. That’s a huge number!

Frequently Asked Questions

We know you’ve got a lot of questions, especially when you’re new. Hopefully, our plant-based diet FAQ can help clear some things up!

What can you NOT eat on a plant-based diet?

A vegan diet skips everything that’s made or comes from an animal. This includes food produced by insects, namely honey. You might be surprised as to how much people ask us that! So, no eggs, milk, fish, or shellfish.

It’s also worth mentioning that a vegetarian diet IS NOT the same as a vegan meal plan. Both do lean towards being a plant-based diet, but the vegetarian lifestyle is more lenient. Some vegetarian practices allow for eating eggs and dairy products which, as we know now, are not allowed.

Is eating bread allowed on plant-based diet?

Of course! It’s all about checking the ingredients. We know that bread is often made with dairy staples like milk and butter. They could also have eggs in them as well. If you remembered what we just talked about earlier, then you know these are no-nos.

Luckily, bread, bagels, muffins, scones, biscuits, and loaves are widely available here at PlantX. If you’re into making some yourself, all of your baking essentials can be picked up here. You can bake and eat all sorts of bread. With a plethora of flours at your fingertips like oat, almond, or buckwheat, you can whip up a lot of vegan baked goodies.

Are there health risks when starting a plant-based diet?

It depends. A lot of folks argue that a vegan diet isn’t entirely healthy and that you miss out on certain nutrients. Quite frankly, that can be said about all diets or lifestyles in general.

A good balance of meals is key here. You can even get supplements to support your diet. Sometimes, the solution is really that simple!

Does being vegan stop at eating and drinking the right things?

No, it doesn’t! We think of veganism as a lifestyle. People often think that it’s simply watching the food you eat, but it can go way beyond that.

Think skin care products, hair products, oral care, pet supplies, and tools. There are even baby products made with a vegan formula! It’s the ingredients that make them stand out, and you’ll be able to tell the difference.
