How is Almond Milk made?

The art of making almond milk is beautifully simple. Almonds are soaked for up to eight hours and then blended with water. If desired, other flavorings, such as vanilla, are added into the blender too. Once blended, the mixture is strained through a cloth to achieve a crisp and creamy consistency. The result? The deliciously nutty almond milk that we all know and love.

Is Almond Milk good for you?

The nutritional value of your almond milk depends on which brand you buy. However, a good brand of almond milk (one that does not contain high amounts of added sugars or chemicals) can be the perfect healthy and nutritious milk to opt for!

Almonds are naturally packed with vitamin E. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant. It helps to control inflammation and stress in the body. It has also been shown to protect against heart disease, cancer and promote bone and eye health. Some studies have even found that vitamin E supports brain health by improving mental performance. Almond milk is an excellent natural source of vitamin E (and many brands even add extra vitamin E to boost the health benefits you get as you drink!)

Almond milk is also often enriched with calcium and vitamin D. Calcium is important for keeping our bones strong and healthy. Vitamin D is important for heart function, bone health, and our immune systems. When the skin is exposed to sunlight, the body can generally produce enough vitamin D. However, many people do not get enough vitamin D due to skin color, lifestyle or simply living in an area with limited sunlight. So, getting vitamin D in your morning milk is not a bad deal at all!

All in all, the health value of your Almond Milk depends on which kind you are drinking! A good brand of almond milk can be a great source of vitamins and minerals. With plenty of options to choose from here at PlantX, have a browse, you are guaranteed to find one that answers all your health needs!

Is Almond milk better than Soy Milk?

Soy Milk has been the traditional alternative to dairy milk for many years. So, the arrival of Almond Milk on the scene has left many people assuming Almond Milk must be pretty special to give Soy Milk a run for its money. Here at PlantX, we like to give all kinds of vegan milk the love they deserve. Therefore, the debate of Almond vs. Soy simply comes down to personal preference.

Soy Milk has a naturally sweet flavor, whereas Almond Milk has a light and delicate nutty kick. Both tend to be fortified with calcium and vitamin D and are healthy sources of fat. Almond Milk also tends to be lower in calories than Soy Milk, but also lower in protein. However, up to 14% of people who are allergic to dairy milk are allergic to soy milk too. Therefore Almond Milk can provide a good alternative for people who find themselves in this tricky spot!

Is Almond Milk good for weight loss?

Almond milk is much lower in calories than cow milk. Although almonds are typically known to be high in calories and fat, due to the processing method only a very small portion of them ends up in the finished milk. In fact, 240 ml of unsweetened almond milk tends to contain around only 30–50 calories, while 240 ml of whole dairy milk tends to contain 140-150 calories. Lowering your calorie intake can be useful when trying to lose weight. So, if weight loss is your goal, Almond Milk may just be the milk for you.

Almond Milk and the Environment

Almond Milk is 100% vegan, so you can guarantee no animals were harmed in the creation of your creamy bottle of almondy goodness. However, when using vegan alternatives, we need to account for the environmental impact manufacturing methods can have too.

The good news about Almond Milk is that it uses much less land than dairy milk, meaning more space for trees and habitats to thrive. It also is known for being the milk with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions. This is because almond trees take in a lot of CO₂ as they grow. However, the downside is that the manufacturing process of Almond Milk uses high amounts of water. This can put stress on the dry environments almonds are grown in.

Our answer? Compared to dairy milk, Almond milk is much better for the environment. So, if you are looking to reduce your carbon footprint, Almond Milk is an easy and tasty way to get started. However, if your priority is keeping an eye on the amount of water used to make the products you buy - perhaps consume Almond Milk in moderation. In this case, we recommend drinking Almond Milk alongside other non-dairy milk. After all, there’s plenty here at PlantX to choose from!

Finally, remember that making the right choices for ourselves and the planet is all about balance. Lucky for you PlantX has everything you need to make the dietary choices you care about, so stick around and you can’t go wrong.
