What is Vegan Mozzarella?

First things first. What is mozzarella? Mozzarella is a traditional southern Italian cheese made from buffalo’s milk. It is semi-soft, mildly flavored, and tender, with a frondy elastic texture when melted.

Vegan mozzarella is dairy-free mozzarella cheese made from purely plant-based ingredients. While much vegan cheese might focus more on the flavor side of things, looking to deliver an umami cheesy taste to your meals, vegan mozzarella has another task.

As well as achieving that mild, creamy and fresh flavor, the best vegan mozzarella brands are all about texture. Non-dairy mozzarella cheese should have a soft, shreddable texture when ‘raw’ and a delightfully elastic, stretchy, and stringy quality when cooked.

Vegan mozzarella is perfect for Italian-inspired dishes like pizza, pasta, paninis, vegan meatball subs, and more. It can also be enjoyed in salads such as a vegan Caprese, sandwiches, wraps, and grain bowls.

Is Vegan Mozzarella Cheese Healthy?

Non-dairy mozzarella cheese is made with plant-based fats and starches. Unlike dairy-based cheese, it is 100% free from cholesterol, as well as harmful growth hormones and antibiotics.

However, as most dairy-free mozzarella is made from coconut oil, it is still a source of saturated fat. Like with any cheese, enjoy it in moderation as part of a balanced diet with plenty of fresh veggies, fruits, and whole grains.

What are the Benefits of Vegan Mozzarella?

  • Sustainable

Made with 100% plant-based ingredients, plant-based mozzarella is a more sustainable alternative to dairy mozzarella. It takes less space, energy and resources to produce, and has a much lower carbon footprint than its dairy-based counterpart.

  • Healthy

Vegan mozzarella cheese is free from cholesterol and often lower in saturated fats than dairy mozzarella. It’s also usually fortified with essential vitamins and minerals such as calcium and vitamin B12.

  • Versatile

Vegan mozzarella can be used in all kinds of tasty recipes - from sandwiches and salads to pizza and pasta. In fact, we think most dishes could be improved by a melty layer of vegan mozzarella!

  • Delicious

With its fresh, mellow flavor and delightfully stringy texture, plant-based mozzarella is a great addition to a balanced vegan diet, adding some cheesy goodness to your meals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Vegan Mozzarella be Eaten Straight Out of the Package?

All our vegan mozzarella can be enjoyed straight out of the package - there are no raw, inedible ingredients. That means it can also be enjoyed ‘raw’ in salads and sandwiches.

However, we think dairy-free mozzarella really shines when melted on pizza, mac n cheese, or a hearty vegan meatball sub. Now that’s some vegan mozzarella magic.

Can I Use Vegan Mozzarella Cheese for Baking?

While most vegan mozzarella cheese is happy to be heated, we think its deliciously mellow flavor and creamy texture might get a little lost in vegan baked goods.

For umami baked goods like vegan cheese scones, vegan cheesy bread, or vegan cheese biscuits, we recommend a stronger, more flavorful vegan cheese like vegan cheddar.

The best way to use your vegan mozzarella is in dishes that really celebrate that famously stringy texture - think vegan pizza, meat-free lasagna, or non-dairy grilled cheese.

What is Dairy-Free Mozzarella Made of?

Dairy-free cheeses are always 100% plant-based, made with nuts, soy, or other plant-based proteins. Most dairy-free mozzarella cheese is made with plant-based fats such as coconut oil, vegetable starch, and natural flavorings. It may also be fortified with calcium and vitamin B12 to add the nutrients you would normally get from dairy cheese.

Does Vegan Mozzarella Taste Good?

Like most vegan food, vegan mozzarella cheese tastes great! If you’re missing soft and pillowy mozzarella, try our vegan cheese mozzarella alternatives and you won't be disappointed. Non-dairy mozzarella has a fresh, creamy mozzarella-y flavor and that soft, stretchy texture you crave.
