How to Care for Hoya ‘Silver Splash’

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered bright light
  • Water: Allow soil to completely dry in between watering. The succulent leaves will hold water. During warmer months, keep the soil moist.
  • Humidity: Average relative humidity of 25% to 49%
  • Temperature: Average from 18°C to 24°C (65°F - 75°F)
  • Fertilizer: Follow a monthly fertilizing schedule when the plant is actively growing. In most cases, this is in the spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer - this means a ratio of NPK that is all the same. Ex: 10-10-10.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, chunky medium.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings
  • Repotting: This can be done every 12-18 months. Choose a pot that is 2” larger in diameter than the original pot. Only do so when necessary as Hoyas prefer to be rootbound.
  • Cleaning Tip: Provide a trellis for extra support and keep the plant appearing nice and tidy.
  • Toxicity: Non-toxic. Although, it is a great practice to keep your plants away from pets and children.

Hoya ‘Silver Splash’ - Common Problems

The leaves on my Hoya are yellowing: This could be a temperature issue. Keep Hoyas away from cold drafts as they are sensitive to changes in temperature.

I think my Hoya has root rot: Hoyas are susceptible to root rot, it’s best to plant your hoya in a soil medium with high porosity. Add orchid bark and perlite to your soil medium. Reduce watering and repot immediately. Try to remove as many damaged roots as possible. If your plant is too far gone, take stem cuttings.

Why are there long stems growing from my plant but no leaves: This is how Hoyas grow! They shoot out long stems and eventually produce their beautiful succulent-like leaves on the stem. Don’t cut these off. You can train the stems to grow along a trellis or wall.

Signs of Overwatering: New growth becomes soft and brown and the leaves begin to drop.

Common Pests: Susceptible to whiteflies and mealybugs.
