Hazel Chardonnay 2020Brand - Hazel Vegan Wines
Fruit: 〚yellow & rich〛
Chardonnay (95%), Grenache Blanc (5%)
This Chardonnay comes from vines planted in the late 1990s in the southern, "Solomon Hills" region of the Santa Maria Valley. The AVA is known for wines of great acidity thanks to a long, cool growing season made possible by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, which creates a blanket of fog, shielding the vines from direct sunlight most mornings.
The grapes were whole-cluster pressed and fermented in neutral French Oak barriques, where they were aged on the lees for 16 months before a single racking for bottling.
This is the rare Chardonnay that will be appreciated by both Chardonnay lovers and haters alike.
AVA: Santa Maria Valley (95%), Santa Ynez Valley (5%)
SIP Certified Sustainable
The Central Coast Hazel wines are a collaboration between Vegan Wines and winemaker, Alex Katz, of Protector Cellars.
Before launching Protector Cellars, the world's first "beyond carbon neutral" winery, Alex spent the last decade making wine in Santa Barbara County, under the labels, La Fenetre and Timbre.
While Protector Cellars, is more focused on Bordeaux varieties, Alex was initially drawn to the Santa Maria Valley region for its world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and is thrilled to continue to make small quantities of these varieties for the Hazel label.
