ABOUT CALATHEA LANCIFOLIA ´RATTLESNAKE´

Calathea lancifolia, more commonly known as the Rattlesnake plant, Peacock plant, or Zebra plant, is a unique evergreen perennial native to Brazil. Common to all species of Calathea, its leaves are long and narrow with ruffled edges, resembling a slithering rattlesnake.

The markings are an interesting ladder of dark green and white ellipses. The underside of the leaves is deep purple. What’s more interesting is, the leaves fold up at night, resembling Prayer plants. It is widely cultivated as a houseplant in temperate regions because of the beautiful, striking patterns of its leaves.

HEALTH BENEFITS

The Rattlesnake plant’s broad leaves are a natural air purifier and can improve the oxygen levels of your environment.

LOOKING AFTER THE PLANT

Place your plant in indirect sunlight, and keep its soil lightly moist. Make sure not to allow the soil to completely dry out in between watering. They are native to South and Central America, where there’s a high level of humidity. Water your plant as often as needed, but make sure that your pot has proper drainage to prevent overwatering and root rot. Mist the leaves every now and then to mimic the humidity of your plant’s natural environment. If you want to take it up a notch, place a humidifier in your room.

The plant is also sensitive to fluoride and chlorine, so make sure to use distilled water or rainwater. Plant your Rattlesnake plant in a peat-rich potting mix, and use fertilizer every month during spring and fall. You don’t have to feed your plant in winter.

To propagate your plant, simply separate the plants and place them in separate pots. It’s best to do this during spring when your plant reaches its growth peak.

PLANT CARE WITH PETS AND CHILDREN

The Rattlesnake plant is non-toxic to pets and children.
