Most vegans consider honey as non-vegan because many commercial bee farmers employ practices that are unethical as per vegan standards. Many farmers clip off the wings of the queen bee to stop her from leaving the colony.
After harvesting honey, the farmers replace the honey in the bee hive with sugar syrups that cannot provide the bees with the nutrition they require, especially in the winter months. In cases when bees in a colony are infected with some disease, the farmers may kill the entire colony than choosing to give medicines to treat the disease. Some evidence has suggested that sucrose and high fructose corn syrup that are placed in replacement of honey in the hives may harm the health of the bees and cause genetic changes that will affect their ability to defend the negative effects of pesticides.
Vegans choose to avoid all animal-derived and animal-produced items from their diet. As honey is an animal-produced food item, it is a misfit in a vegan diet.
